The “Literary Hotels” International Symposium aims to explore the hotel as a site of modernity as a well as a broader cultural phenomenon that contributed to shaping modern subjectivity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. As a literary setting, the hotel, from the 1890s to WWII, becomes a trope that expresses contemporary and ever-changing modes of living dictated by commerce, the tourist industry, technologies of transport, and new forms of labour, which led to displacement and mobility. Hotel spaces become the transitory settings of modern literature, complicating binaries such as the private and the public spheres, mobility and rootedness, safety and risk, cosmopolitanism and nationalism, conservatism and progress. Our speakers, from four continents, engage with the literary hotel as represented in Anglo-American and European literature and culture of the period of the 1890s-1940s. The programme can be found here: https://hotems.enl.uoa.gr/events/
The conference is funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research & Innovation (HFRI), under the “First Call for HFRI Research Projects to support Faculty members and researchers and the procurement of high-cost research equipment grant” and is associated with the Research Project: “Hotels and the Modern Subject: 1890-1940” (Project number: 1653).
